Why Is Yoga Day Celebrated Only On 21st June?
There is also a special reason to choose the day of June 21st for International Yoga Day. Actually, this day is the longest day in the northern hemisphere, which can also be called summer solstice.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during his address to the United Nations General Assembly in 2014, had said that this is the day when the northern hemisphere has the longest day of the year. On this day the sun rises early and the sunset is the longest. Apart from this, 21st June is also the summer solstice day in India. That’s why 21st June is celebrated as the Internation Yoga Day.
History of World Yoga Day:
On 11th December 2014, the United Nations General Assembly announced June 21st as the International Yoga Day or World Yoga Day. After this, people all over the world started celebrating International Yoga Day on 21st June since 2015.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi had discussed the importance of yoga while addressing the United Nations General Assembly on September 2014. A proposal to celebrate “International Yoga Day” on 21st June got approval by 177 members in the United Nations.
This proposal of Prime Minister Modi was passed with the full majority within 90 days, which is the shortest time for any day resolution in the United Nations.
